The Thing About Hockey

The thing about hockey is, its a lifestyle.  It grabs you before you know it, even when you least expect it. And its not limited to the player.  It grabs everyone.  It's like the mob, once you are in, you are in and there ain't no way of getting out. Rink life, the sounds, the smells, the electricity - its addictive, and it refreshes itself every season, well, maybe not the smells, but you get the idea.

You will learn, your hockey family becomes your extended family.  You will spend more time with them during a fall season than people truly related to you by blood.  Now, as in every family, this has its rewards and its curses, but still - wouldn't want it any other way. As your child grows from a silver mite to a Midget and possibly beyond, your hockey family will continue to grow, and even though ice hockey is one of today's fastest growing sports, its still a small world and paths cross often and at times unexpectedly. So Be Kind.

Rink Life - Love it!!

Hockey Concussions

A diagram of the forces on the brain in concussion

Guest Blogger, Moyra Gorski, of  MyLivingBetter, is an expert on holistic wellness with a specialty in hockey nutrition.  To better prepare your athlete for the season, please visit her website, or contact her for additional information.

We are well into the hockey season at our house. Lots of laundry, racking up the miles on the road and trying to keep the athletes filled up are all common. Another common occurrence, unfortunately is the incidence of concussions.

From 1997 to 2007, emergency department visits for concussion in kids aged 8 to 13 playing organized sports doubled, and the number of visits increased by more than 200 percent in older teens, according to the Pediatric journal report.Already 3 players on one of my sons teams have been out due to concussions . Although some believe the only treatment for concussions is rest, there is specific hockey nutrition that is proven effective and beneficial in speeding the recovery process.

1. Omega 3/ fish oil. General recommendations for intake of fish oil is 1-2 gms per day. Post concussion up to 4 gms per day is recommended. Omega 3 is a powerful anti inflammatory and it will aid in reducing the  neuro inflammation of the brain. And of course the brain loves fish oil to help it make new cells. Shaklee OMEGAGUARD® is pure and potent, tripled distilled to guarantee its purity.

2. Protein: protein is essential for healing. Shaklee has some great options for protein from Energizing soy protein or Cinch powder for shakes to Cinch snack or meal bars. Packed full of non-GMO protein, they not only contain helpful-to-healing protein, all the options taste great.

3. Antioxidants and lots of them. Grab a handful of blueberries, vitamin C or spoonful of Vivix.   Key ingredients in Vivix have been shown effective in cellular repair and defense as well as impacting oxidative stress in cells.  Supplement with up to 3,000 mg a day of vitamin C, which also helps reduce the oxidative stress in the brain associated with head trauma.

4. Cranial sacral therapy: Non supplement but helpful just the same.
Cranialsacral therapy is an offshoot of osteopathic medicine and works on the premise of the dynamic fluid movement between the cranial and sacrum. Post concussion there may be blockages in the fluid flow....simply..and this gentle therapy can help to unblock the restrictions and bring the flow back to Normal.
A local friend and therapist who I trust is Carol from One Mind and Body Cranial sacral therapy.

5. Melatonin: a sport medicine physician n the area who is quite involved with the local hospital  concussion clinic also recommends melatonin. I really don't know much about this so I won't venture to comment much. If anyone of you have more info, I would welcome it.

Recovering from a concussion can take between 2-4 weeks....quite often a very frustrating time for the athlete who suddenly can't participate in his sport he or she loves. Rest and reducing stimulation is necessary. But adding the appropriate hockey nutrition can give your athletes what it needs to heal more quickly and get them back on the ice or playing field more quickly. Trust these Shaklee  essentials and you will find yourself and your children enjoying more games and playing time, with a healthy smile on their face.

Lets Talk Helmets

The new youth hockey season is in full swing, unfortunately, so are head injuries.  Having coached only  6 games with my midget teams, I have already had 3 of my players out with head injuries - to be specific, concussions.  It's got to stop.

There are times when a head injury is brought on by an illegal check, but this is not always the case. Concussions can also occur due to an awkward or untimely fall, as well as from a perfectly legal check.  So, whats the answer?  The best head protection money can buy.

I turned to our area expert, Bryan Kowalski, manager at BNR Pro Shop.  Asked him quite simply, "Which helmets do you recommend for the best protection from head injuries?"  He was quick to reply.  "Without a doubt, the Re-Akt helmet from Bauer or the Warrior Krown 360." Bryan further explains why - "These helmets offer the best protection for rotational force hits, which are side impact hits that cause the player to suffer long term or severe concussions.  Majority of helmets on the market today only protect frontal impact."  Parents, take note, whether your skater is a mite or a midget, its time to seriously protect their head from all angles.

Next I asked about the cost.  At BNR (Illinois locations in All Seasons Ice Rink in Naperville and Fox Valley Ice Rink in Geneva) the cost for the Re-Akt is $199.99  and the Warrior Krown retails at $139.99.  For you Naperville Sabre parents, you all received a gift card from the club, invest it wisely, get your child a top of the line helmet.  Lets keep our skaters on the ice, and keep their heads protected, they will need their brains to work for far more important things than hockey.

Does Lightning Hit Twice?

They always say its a one in a million chance that lightning will strike you twice.  However, if you a participant in the CCHXtreme defensemans camp, it definitely happened.  First a power outtage at All Seasons Ice Arena caused the camp to be relocated to the Rocket Ice Arena, and 5 minutes before taking the ice, Rocket Ice Arena lost power too.  Bad Karma? Not sure. Heard from another parent that in a camp at Fox Valley the previous week, they had lost power.  So strange, isn't it? Why is it that power outtages are so attracted to ice rinks?

What impressed me the most was how the skaters and their parents were so understanding,

and were willing to accept yet another change so that they got their ice time.  Illinois Youth Ice Hockey is booming, and these skaters, like me, LOVE this game. Particularly since the Blackhawks won the cup a few years back, the learn to play ice hockey interest has grown. Whats even more awesome is these kids end up wanting to play year around.  My Summer Pond Hockey League had its most teams registered EVER.  More skaters were interested in ice hockey classes and private and small group lessons. ( Thats what I call job security :).  All kidding aside, I love the fact that our sport has grown and prospered.  It has been stated that Girls Ice Hockey is the fastest growing sport in North America and I believe it.

As we get ready for yet another round of tryouts, fall seasons, and tournaments, I want to wish every child good luck at your evaluations and make it an awesome year. No matter what team you are on, this game promises to make it exciting.

Lets Talk Tot Hockey

Nothing brings a smile to your face like watch little kids learn to skate. Yeah, Yeah, the bigger kids and adults are faster, stronger, EXCITING to watch, but if you need a mood elevator, come out and watch tothockey.

The Tot Hockey program at All Seasons Ice Arena is a learn to skate program that teaches children from age 3 and up. We teach boys and girls (Did you know girls hockey is the fastest growing sport in America right now?) how to skate, and how to fall, because at this level that happens a bunch.  But the cool thing about these little ones is that they never get hurt when they fall.  Why? They are way closer to the ice than adults, and way more nimble.  In essence, they bounce right back up.  Definitely confirms the statement “The bigger they are, the harder they fall”.  And honestly, the tots don’t mind falling, they actually laugh about it. It’s all good, Mom!

Learning to skate teaches your child a bunch, balance, agility and it is done with great instructors who place safety first and FUN second.  Stress free, physical activity that can be done year round, no matter what the weather – very popular when its 100 degrees outside like today.

If you are interested in starting your child in a Tot Hockey class, visit our website, or contact me. I am positive your child will love it!

Be Prepared For Tryouts

There's nothing worse than the feeling of rejection. To be told your not good enough, fast enough, or strong enough is devastating, no matter how the coach puts it. Tryouts are getting ever closer, and the time to being in peak form is drawing near. Summer Hockey Camps are the best way to stay in shape, or even whoop your backside into tryout form.

Sure, it matters how much  time you spend on the ice, but it's also just as important what you are doing off  ice that will help with your improvement. Off season conditioning does not only include on ice and gym training, there are a lot of summer activities that help you cross train.  Shooting pucks in the driveway, rollerblading, even other sports like lacrosse and baseball can help you improve different aspects of your game. Being on the ice is fantastic, but if it is not always available to you, and there are other fun alternatives to on-ice training. If the thought of giving up the ice rink for the whole summer is just unbearable....Read on.

CCH Xtreme has a variety of Hockey Camps that will help you achieve your goal of making whatever team you are shooting for. Check out the Camps and Clinics tab on CheliosHokey.com for everything we have to offer. Competition for spots is getting tougher and tougher, make sure your chances are at there best by being in the best shape possible.

Enjoy your summer!

Age is just a number, like the one on your jersey

Summer is in full swing, and so is the Chelios Adult Hockey League. The CAHL is boasting over 20 teams this summer with 3 different divisions. A couple weeks have gone by and have showed how competitive each league is, posting close scores across the board. This adult hockey league is a great way for adults to keep in shape, learn the game, or rekindle that old competitive fire that you once had playing years ago. There is a level for everyone; beginners, players picking the game back up, or even a league for the grizzled veterans of adult leagues past.

Adult ice hockey classes are also available! In our adult classes, we go over the fundamental basics, in a fun relaxed environment. Here players can learn the game, or re-learn the skills you once had fresh off your playing days in high school. Check out chelioshockey.com for details about all of our adult hockey experiences that CCH Xtreme can help you with.

Hope all is well, and your golf scores are low.

Pushing for Banners

Try-outs are just around the corner! Midget Tier 1 hockey begins their evaluations this month, followed by High School hockey next month, and Tier 2 as well as Recreational leagues in September. Illinois Hockey shows every year that it's top team can be a National Championship contender. In order to make it to nationals, you must be Blackhawk Cup champions come next spring. Help your team become Illinois Youth Ice Hockey state champs, and national contenders, by being in shape, and making that elite team you have been striving for.

CCH Xtreme has plenty of Youth Hockey Camps that will not only keep you in shape, but help you improve your overall game. Our Battle Camps will help you or your player become a force to be reckon with in every aspect of the game. Our Midget Boot camp will whip any player into peak shape right before the opening of tryouts. Hockey Summer Camps are a must if you want to be on the top team, and get good playing time.

If you are looking for individual skill work, Private Hockey Lessons can give you one on one training, while focusing on each aspect on the game, the player wants to improve on the most. Illinois Ice Hockey is one of the most competitive states to play in, with talent spread across the state, and every club having a chance at that coveted state title, and for the possible chance at the USA Hockey National Championships. Check out our website at www.chelioshockey.com to find the right camp, clinic, or lesson for you or your player. Hope all is well, and your golf scores low.

Off and....Skating!

Summer is officially in full swing. This week begins the regular season for two of the largest summer leagues in Illinois Hockey. My Adult Hockey League summer session fires up as well as the regular season to my 3-on-3 and 4-on-4 Youth Ice Hockey Leagues. This year is the busiest that we have ever been at CCH Xtreme. We have just shy of 100 Youth Ice Hockey teams and a healthy couple dozen Adult Ice Hockey teams. Life without the NHL on TV can be tough, but there is always some good hockey around the corner if you need your fix. Speaking of the NHL, the awards ceremony is tonight in Vegas, that would be a fun trip.

If you did not find yourself in one of our Summer Hockey Leagues, not to worry! There are numerous Youth Hockey Camps hosted by CCH Xtreme. Check out the website at chelioshockey.com for details on the many Hockey Summer Camps held by us at a variety of locations. Remember, you will only get out of this summer, what you put into it. Try-outs are just around the corner, make sure you make the team you set out for this fall. Private Hockey Lessons are available all summer and are taught by myself, as well as my trained instructors, that have carried their hockey careers on past the youth level. I hope you have been enjoying the beautiful weather we have been having. Don't forget to do some daily exercises to keep your game at its peak through the summer. I hope all is well, and I'll see you around the rink!

New Kings Crowned!

Wow, what an explosion of offense last night. It seemed like everyone got into the action last night for Los Angeles. With their backs inching closer to that proverbial wall, the Kings put the finishing touch on the New Jersey Devils with the pedal to the floor for a full 60 minutes. Pierre McGuire asked the Kings captain last night, “What will this do for hockey in southern California…?”. Like a true captain he mentioned how the “Great One” was what started it all in SoCal, and that we will have to wait about 20 years or so to find out. In the past few years, we have seen number jump exponentially in Illinois Hockey since our Blackhawks won the cup in 2010. We saw a jump in everything from my Learn to Play Ice Hockey programs, all the way through my Adult Hockey Leagues. It’s great to see people embrace the game, especially the ones who did not have a chance to play after their days in Youth Ice Hockey, and are beginning to replay this wonderful game.

It will be a long summer without our beloved game on TV, but there are plenty of things to fill the time. Now, I’m not talking about sitting around watching the Olympics, eating chips, and drinking soda. If you want to succeed at your level, just like the Kings achieved last night, there is a lot of Hockey Training to be done. We have numerous Hockey Lessons available, or even just going outside and stickhandling. The weather today is great, strap on those roller blades and take a spin around your neighborhood. It may seem like a long time away, but August and September try-outs and evaluations are right around the corner, and you want to look your best for your new coach this year.

Super Success!!!

It is now the day after. Super Sunday has concluded with great success. We saw many teams raise the cup as champions of their respective levels, and to see the smile on the kids’ faces gave me true perspective on why I got into this great profession. I would like to congratulate everyone on great seasons, as everyone showed great improvement this season. I would also like to thank all of the volunteer coaches who came out every week and made it fun for the kids. This season could not have run as smooth as it did without you.

This week also begins the start of the 3-on-3 and 4-on-4 season.  I am excited to announce that this year we have again set a new record of teams registered to play this summer. Hockey summer camps and clinics are also upon us. Check out what is in store under the CCH Xtreme Camps & Clinics tab at chelioshockey.com! Starting soon is the Puck and Tee camp, an excellent camp where young players can learn the best of both worlds, hockey and golf. The S3 Battle Camp is another great hockey camp where players can get in shape and hone their skills for the upcoming year. Other hockey camps include the ADM weekly camp, the FUNdamentals camp, For the Tenders Clinic as well as the rapidly approaching Midget Boot Camp. CCH Xtreme hockey has camps for players of all ages and skill sets.

I hope your summer has started off as well as mine, and I look forward to seeing everyone around the rink.

Getting Started with Mens Adult League Hockey

If you've always dreamed of becoming a hockey player, but never really took lessons or participated in the sport as a kid, you may think that it's just too late. Well, there are mens adult lessons and league opportunities that are custom made for people who are just learning. That means that you can learn how to play, while you're actually participating in a league. What more could you ask for as a newbie adult hockey player?

Starting with the Basics

Before you get too far into things and begin playing mens adult league hockey, you'll probably want to spend some time learning the basics. We have some adult classes, for men and women, that can get you up to speed with all the basics. When you sign up for this class, you'll learn:

·         Basic Skating Skills
·         Stick Handling & Passing
·         Shooting
·         Basic offense and defense skills
·         Basic league game-play

Once you get the feel for all these basics, and learn to put them together, you'll realize that it is never too late to become a hockey player. And by taking classes and competing with other adults, you'll be able to socialize with like-minded people and possibly even strike up some great friendships.

Don't assume that it's too late for you. Hockey, like other skills, can be learned no matter what your age is. It just takes a willingness to get started. If you check out some of our adult hockey classes and leagues, you're sure to find a program that will be a great way for you to get started. And while you're learning hockey skills, you'll be getting into better shape, which is something that all of us need to do.

See ya on the ice,

Do You Need to Attend Ice Hockey Camps?

If you've been playing hockey, or simply thinking about getting started, you've undoubtedly heard about Ice Hockey Camps. Just about every major sport, and even some of the minor ones, have camps and clinics related to them. Hardcore athletes usually make it a point to attend at least a few of these camps, but some people are on the fence about whether or not hockey camps are for them.

After all, some people reason, can't you learn the same stuff at regular practices that you'll learn at camps? That's a good point, as the majority of skills that you can work on at camp, are skills that you'll pick up along the way. But there are some definite benefits to going to a hockey camp that you should consider as part of your regular training.

Dedicated Camps

While there are some camps and clinics that are very broad in scope, many of them are very focused and can help you turn weaknesses into strengths or to build on strengths that you already have. Giving laser-focused attention to one particular skill is a great reason to include camps in your training regimen.

See Who Else is Improving Their Game

When you come to a camp, you'll meet other, like-minded hockey players, who are working hard at improving their own skills. It's a great opportunity to check out your competition and see how your skills stack up against other players.

Trust me when I tell you that these are just the basic reasons that you should seriously consider attending hockey camps. If you're dedicated to becoming the best at your sport, you're sure to find that you will become a much better hockey player after attending camps especially if you are moving up a level or trying to make a higher team.

See ya on the ice,

Why You Should Love Hockey Drills

I remember hating hockey drills when I was a child.  I hated them the way my cousin hated her piano lessons.  The constant repetition made no sense to me.  Why am I doing this when I should be playing?  Kids still complain about this.  It’s natural.  Human beings like variety.  Standing in one spot hitting wrist shot after wrist shot seems like an enormous waste of time to a child. Complaining about hockey drills is just a part of the process, so much so, that I think if they ever stopped I should begin to worry.

The reason why kids should love ice hockey drills—okay, maybe not love hockey drills, but at least respect hockey drills is because the more you do them the more the motions become a part of their “instinct”.  Instead of having that brief pause in your head where you contemplate that shot, you’re shooting.  Instead of wondering if you should pass, you’re passing.

Wayne Gretzky once said that the only way a kid is ever going to practice is if it’s “total fun” for him.  Apparently, his coach made hit fun for him, because he certainly practiced and practiced some more.  You don’t get to be The Great One by sitting on your behind all day.

We always try to take our ice hockey drills and put a little spice on them.  We know that they are a necessary part of your hockey progression, but we also haven’t forgotten what it’s like to be nine years old and just wanting to play.  Our instructors know that kids like competition—or else they wouldn’t be in a competitive sport like hockey in the first place.  All of our drills are a game to the student, and may the best player…win.
